About Sugar
Sugar, as a daily food product, occupies a very important place in human life. This food product, rich in good substances, provides the body with the required energy. This product, known in science as "sucrose", is obtained from both sugar cane and sugar beet. Although sugar, which is native to India, was obtained from cane, its discovery in beetroot dates back to 1747. The word "sugar" we use is derived from the ancient Sanskrit word "sakara". It means "mixed juice". Sugar is the general name given to a series of sweet-tasting, chemically short-chain, water-soluble carbohydrates, many of which are used as food. It is the most common food product in modern times. Although sugar is present in the tissues of most plants, high enough concentrations for industrial production are found mainly in sugar cane and sugar beet. Of the 94-97 million tons of sugar production worldwide (calculated as raw sugar), 56-60 million tons of sugar cane and 36-38 million tons of sugar beet are accounted for.
